LAS VEGAS -- Ryan Garcia took a beat then dropped to one knee the delayed reaction to a clean left hook from Gervonta "Tank" Davis sending a ripple of shock through the sold-out crowd at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
Garcia 23 23-1 19 KOs arguably the sport's most popular young fighter miraculously beat the count and somehow survived the round but he never fully recovered as Davis 29-0 27 KOs arguably the top knockout artist in the sport today cruised to a unanimous decision victory.
Garcia landed 113 of 364 punches 31 percent while Davis connected on 133 of 298 45 percent.
Both fighters landed an impressive percentage of power punches with Davis connecting on 48 of 142 34 percent and Garcia landing 35 of 128 27 percent.
Davis was the clear aggressor throughout the fight throwing 155 more punches than Garcia and landing 20 more power punches.
Garcia's best moments came in the seventh and ninth rounds when he landed a series of clean shots that wobbled Davis but the champion was able to weather the storm and regain control of the fight.
In the end it surely was as Davis retained his WBA lightweight title and extended his unbeaten record to 29-0.
