Avalanche Take 3-1 Series Lead
The Colorado Avalanche moved within one win of the Stanley Cup on Monday night, defeating the Florida Panthers 1-0 in overtime in Game 4 of the 1996 Stanley Cup Final. The Avalanche now lead the best-of-seven series 3-1.
The game was scoreless through regulation, with both teams having their chances to score. The Avalanche had a power play in the third period, but could not convert. The Panthers had a chance to win the game in the final seconds of regulation, but Avalanche goaltender Patrick Roy made a save on a shot by Scott Mellanby.
In overtime, the Avalanche finally broke through when Joe Sakic scored a goal assisted by Peter Forsberg. The goal came at 10:28 of the overtime period and gave the Avalanche a 1-0 win.
Roy was brilliant in goal for the Avalanche, stopping all 30 shots he faced. Panthers goaltender John Vanbiesbrouck also played well, making 29 saves.
The Avalanche will have a chance to close out the series in Game 5 on Wednesday night in Denver.
